We went to Lake Martinez this morning to kayak with Sue & Paul Finney, but when we got there, we all agreed that the wind was a bit too much, especially for our kayaks. It was an interesting area. There were some incredible homes that bordered the lake, but that was it–the rest seemed quite impoverished, which I did not photograph.
On our way back to Yuma, we suggested a stop to check out a tiny chapel off the road. It was pretty cool. Ironically, Sue & Paul had stopped previously.
Once we got back to Vinny, Barry suggested going for a hike in the hills (Gila Mtns) that are right behind us. Paul & Sue called the hike to the top of Telegraph Pass a “one and done” hike for them. They had already checked it off, so we went without them. You have a couple choices for the first part of the the trail. We took the more narrow path. It had significant up and down sections that had LOTS of loose gravel and larger rocks. I was glad I had our hiking poles. Luckily there was a decent amount that was fairly flat. It was a little over 3 miles from the car to the gate where we began part 2 of the trail. This was about 1 mile UP! It was very steep with switch backs, but the views were great when we reached the top. Barry was essential in helping me make it all the way to the top! He is THE BEST! We were grateful for a nice breeze since it was 83 degrees when we started.
Now we have to hike DOWN. Glad to have a little more wind! The hiking poles helped on the way down so that my knees didn’t have to take 100% of the downhill impact. Elevation in Yuma is about 130 ft. Elevation Pass is 1,500+ ft.
It took about two hours for us to get from the car to the top, but only one hour to get back down to the car. Having finished. I’m glad we did the hike, but I agree with Paul. Not necessary to hike it a second time. That box has been checked!
