Barry and I are planners. Barry spends a lot of time planning out our navigation routes to each of our destinations. Our travel days do not usually include stops along the way. Course we haven’t really had major points of interest that have been along our way…till today. (Helps that we only tend to go about 200 miles a day we travel.) Today, while I was driving, we decided to take the turn off for Meteor Crater, the best preserved meteor crater in the world. Due to signage we figured something like this would have some decent RV parking-especially since we’d be arriving around 9:30 am. Parking was excellent! Parking Lot #1 is just for RV’s!! I have a fear of taking a spur of the moment road to go see something, and have issues due to our length/height/weight, etc. So glad we stopped!
The sign that we thought said “Meteor Crater National Monument” on the typical brown with white lettering, actually said “Meteor Crater NATURAL Monument”. Therefore, our National Park pass was not valid here. A lady in line told us it was definitely worth the cost of admission. Admission was $16 for seniors (60+). You have to pay that if you want to see the crater. (So after the 6-mile drive off of 40 West, it would be silly not to see it!) You also get the info area which was very well done with some interactive displays, and was very informative. However, do NOT bother with the “4-d movie/”ride” experience for an additional $5 each. It was really lame. Oh well, the gal at the ticket window said she liked it enough to sit through it three times in a row. Afterwards, I thought, really??? She needs to experience some decent virtual rides and IMAX 3-d experiences.
So what’s the chance of a meteorite falling to earth? The following information I found quite enlightening. Hope you do, too.
