We made it to New Orleans, LA (NOLA) today. We are staying two nights at the Pontchartrain Landing RV park. There is a pool with a great view, but since it wasn’t very warm we weren’t likely to try to squeeze in a dip within the time we’re here. It is a decent park within reasonable driving access to the French Quarter. Luckily, Pontchartrain Rv Park has a shuttle to the French Quarter for $6 roundtrip per person. We had to wait for the 3:45 PM run.
My college XAN sister, Debbie Goodson May, highly recommended the Redfish Grill, so that’s where we headed for dinner! We had to try some authentic gumbo while in Louisiana, so that’s what we ordered first. Luckily, we only ordered one to start with to see if we liked it. It was an alligator sausage and shrimp gumbo. We were eager to taste the alligator sausage. It was really good. But then I had a feeling the gumbo was made with wheat. I didn’t eat anymore till we asked. Sure enough the roux used wheat flour. Barry got to finish the gumbo and I ordered the house salad, which was really good. Having already eaten the gumbo and salad, we decided sharing one entree would be plenty of food. We ordered the wood grilled redfish with sautéed lump crabmeat. The photo on the internet of this dish showed 2 filets of the redfish. When our entree arrived there was only one filet that was split between the two plates, but it was the perfect portion of food! AND OMG! It was amazing! We savored each bite! We kept saying to each other how incredibly good it was. Then our server brought me a birthday treat. Together we ate most of the ice cream. We would definitely eat here again–and order the same entree !! Thank you, Deb, for the recommendation!!
It was pretty cool how some of the streets were now closed to traffic which allowed people to walk down the sidewalks as well as the street! There were multiple “street musicians”–mainly drummers using the good ole 5-gallon buckets as the drums. They actually were pretty decent. There was one father who had his young son sitting next to him. Touched my heart. Some of the music from places we walked by was extremely loud. I couldn’t imagine being inside. We continued down Bourbon Street to Legends Park which was an outdoor courtyard/park with live music. We only had a little over an hour before we had to catch the shuttle back to the RV park. I thoroughly enjoyed the selections this quartet performed. When they performed “Come Fly Away”, I immediately thought of Abby and how much she would love it here. I called her, put my phone on speaker phone mode to share the song, and thus include her with my birthday. I definitely caught her by surprise. LOL Legends Park was a perfect way to finish off my birthday in the French Quarter! They even sang “Happy Birthday” to me as we left! We were lucky enough to also catch the last of a street performer who was evidently quite the entertainer who had a large crowd around him watching. He finished with a gymnastic feat. I will update this post with a video clip of that, as well as, a few of the various musicians from the night when I finally can get video clips to post!
