Seeing how vibrant the rock monuments get with the setting sun, we were there for the entire sunset on the East and West Mittens and Merrick Butte.
The sun did not disappoint. Although we did have hopes that we might see a third mitten appear as the shadow of the left mitten started to appear on the right mitten. Not quite the right month for that to happen.
The wind kicked up so much in the late afternoon that when we took the pictures below we had to hold onto each other to not lose our balance!
Talking with a couple next to us during the sunset, we decided to come first thing in the morning to experience the sunrise. It was supposed to occur between the East Mitten Butte and Merrick Butte! Must be back by 6:30am!
The sunrise: We were surprised at the number of people there for the sunrise! It was definitely chilly. Some of the people were a group from Arizona Highways Magazine. This was the first sunrise I have ever gotten up for to intentionally see the entire sunrise! When I’ve gotten up at o’dark thirty for a race or triathlon a few years ago, I got pieces of sunrises while on the way or getting ready and waiting for the event to start, but I didn’t get to totally just take in the full sunrise. I certainly never got up early with the sunrise being the goal!
Yay! Here’s my chance 😊
So glad you are having the beautiful adventures!
Thanks. It has been absolutely amazing! We had the most spectacular sunset here in the Canyonlands area and an incredible hike up to Delicate Arch in Arches National Park. (Coming in future blogs. 🙂
