Sue and Paul Finney, who are our newest friends here at Fortuna De Oro, invited us to go kayaking. It didn’t take us long to say, “Yes”! So we loaded our kayaks into our Jeep and followed them to Squaw Lake which was about 25 miles from Fortuna De Oro. It was a very pleasant drive and only took about 30 minutes to get there. As we approached the area we saw the unbelievably turquoise water of Senator’s Wash. There is a campground across the water here. (We will kayak here next time.)
Senator’s Wash:
We continued over the dike to Squaw Lake. We launched our kayaks here. Sue and Paul have a beautiful Hobie Mirage i14T (tandem) kayak that they were able to transport fully inflated and ready to go. Barry had to inflate ours after we arrived. Once we were inflated and were ready to launch, another couple (Kathy & Glen) who happen to be neighbors of Sue & Paul back in Idaho, arrived with their kayaks. Weather was PERFECT. Full sunshine with a pleasant breeze.
Paul was our tour guide. The views were amazing! We peacefully meandered our way to the backwaters of the Colorado River just north of the Imperial Dam. We leisurely kayaked for a good 2 1/2-3 hours. It was the best escape!! We were treated to an added bonus: 3 wild burros up on one of the hills. How cool was that!?!
As we looped back into Squaw Lake, “King Paul-Hona” welcomed us to his island. LOL
When we got back to shore, Paul & Sue had Barry and me take their kayak out for a test paddle pedal. 🙂 It was amazing. Might be time to seriously consider an upgrade! I would feel much more comfortable and at ease with one of these on varied water conditions more than I am with our current ones. Time for research. 🙂
What an AWESOME DAY!!!! We are DEFINITELY coming back!!! Thank you, Paul and Sue for showing us this incredible piece of paradise! Yuma just went higher on my list for long term stays. 🙂
