Jo & Don Visit Us in Yuma!

Jo and Don are always on the go. They travel frequently to Mexico and Hawaii, with occasional trips back to family in Tennessee. So it’s not easy to find a time for our schedules to mesh for a visit at our home at Carefree Village Resort (CVR).

April 9 – 11 worked! Woohoo. After they arrived we had some lunch, and toured CVR before going to visit with Janet and Bob Bockus who live full-time in the Yuma Foothills. It was nice to catch up with each other.

The six of us originally met while at Pio Pico Thousand Trails about 5 or 6 years ago. We all enjoyed meeting at what was then the “Adult” pool at Pio. We always had good snacks/meals while we swam, played water volleyball, and even corn hole on the pool deck.

Our conversations with Bob and Janet during those first two-three years put Yuma on our radar as a possible home base for us to check out. We did that in March of 2020. Of course Covid-19 hit, and we ended up stuck in Yuma for 3 months at Fortuna De Oro, but by the end of May 2020 we decided to make CVR our home base. Ironically, we have not seen much of Janet and Bob the last couple years when we’ve been here during the winter season. Our varied interests keep us all living busy, but fulfilling lives. We have continued to stay in touch. Whenever Barry and I, or Janet and Bob are in the San Diego area, we try to get together with Jo and Don – IF they are in town.

April 10 – Trip to Los Algodones
Don and Jo go across the border to Tecate quite a bit, and they took us there when we were in San Diego. Janet and Bob wanted Jo and Don to experience Los Algodones since there is so much more here as soon as you cross the border.

Jo and Don were surprised at the density of vendors within just a few blocks. You start down one side of the street with its shops and vendors, but then you end up curving or turning into another set of them. Throw in a few hundred dentists along the way, pharmacies, optical options, a couple liquor stores, and taco and shrimp vendors…and that’s Los Algodones, AKA “Molar City”.

Prescription drugs are significantly cheaper in Mexico, and make it worth the trip if you are on any. Even over-the-counter ones are cheaper, too. If you drink alcohol, tequila can be a decent buy. You can find some that are unique to Mexico. We like the almond tequila, but one bottle lasts us quite a while. Vanilla is another popular item people get while here.

Bob and Janet wanted to share their favorite place for lunch. Bob loves the margaritas. 🙂 It was beginning to get pretty warm, so a fully shaded table was perfect. We even had a bit of a breeze with the nice big tree near us.

Don, being the more than generous guy he is, bought 3 t-shirts from a vendor who came by our table. Two were for Janet and me, and the third one was of course for his better half. 🙂

I’ve heard people talk about “The Green Door” down here but didn’t really know what it was or where it was. Well, Janet and Bob took us there. It was just getting ready to open. We all went in. OK..it’s a drinking place with a dance/stage area…with a pole. Elvis was here.

Evidently, once they are open, they have girls that dance (thus the pole) TOTALLY nude! Yeah, I won’t be going there. (BTW–heard they aren’t the bodies you may have in mind. LOL)

Most cities in Mexico now seem to have these colorful letter signs of the town name. Too bad Los Algodones doesn’t have a better background for theirs!

When we got back to CVR, we headed to our pool. Bob and Janet came over after they took care of their dogs. Janet wore her new Algodones t-shirt over her swimsuit. 🙂

We turned the waterfalls on. Don seemed to enjoy them…

It was great having our friends, Jo and Don here for a couple days. We didn’t get to the bowling alley, so you HAVE to come back. You are actually welcome to come visit anytime. 🙂
