Last year we saw a large branch that just dropped from a huge eucalyptus tree within Pio Pico’s RV park south side, and it just missed hitting the RV on the site. It is frustrating because there is nothing one can notice from looking at these trees that would indicate a weakness where one may simply break off! Plus many are so amazingly tall you can’t inspect them from the ground. They are gorgeous trees. The branches are massive.
The other day when we were on our evening walk through the park we noticed it happened again. This time it was near the gate on the North side. It looks like a tornado came through even though we did not have any strong winds. Planning to be more aware of these trees and not park under any if we can help it. Shade may not be that important! Eucalyptus trees are trying to survive, but with lack of water these mighty trees may drop a huge branch/limb to help the main tree survive. More on “summer limb drop” due to heat can be found here.
Another one falls! The biggest eucalyptus tree on the south side dropped a branch yesterday. It landed on camper’s tow trailer. No damage. Luckily it missed his nice Coachman Class A! With the frequency we have witnessed these branches dropping we will definitely avoid tress like this. Vinny is our home.
