Awed by Northern Lights

I was so shocked when I looked on Facebook Saturday afternoon to see several friends in Washington posting amazing photos of the Northern Lights. WHAT!?!? The pictures were all incredible. WOW! And this was from Oak Harbor to Everett to Battle Ground, WA! Did I miss a phenomenal opportunity last night here in Wyoming? I went online when someone mentioned the lights may occur again Saturday night. It appeared that we were on the edge or a little above. YEA!! Even though the show was expected to be less intense, we may still likely see it here by Devils Tower National Monument!

Saturday sunset was 8:16 pm. By 10 pm it was dark. OMG – Within about 30 minutes when I looked out there was a definite light area above the hills. Could it be??? We immediately were outside and standing in awe as we saw before our eyes such vivid colors through our phone lenses. This was an indescribable experience!

10:36pm – 10:38pm: WOW!

We were not located south of Devils Tower to be able to capture the spectacular background of the Northern Lights with the tower silhouetted against it. But at least I could get it in the same picture to identify where we were. Tonight’s display was downright stunning!

This was exhilarating to experience! It was cool to see stars in and around the Northern Lights display. Then I noticed the Big Dipper toward the upper edge! I hoped it would show in a picture…and it did!

Since viewing of the Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed, we feel blessed to have been at the right place and time. A park employee shared with me her pictures from both nights. She was delighted that Saturday’s show was significantly more vivid than Friday’s. Friday’s was still amazing but more washed out.

On April 8, 2024 we experienced the Total Solar Eclipse in the Dallas area, and now about a month later, we had front row seats for the Northern Lights! (Yes, in between, we had a tornado scare that was a little too close for comfort, but we were fine.)
